Genesis unveils first hybrid system for GV80 SUV

Genesis has unveiled its first hybrid powertrain, a 2.5-liter turbo hybrid system set to debut in the GV80 Hybrid next month. The system utilizes a parallel configuration with two electric motors—a starter-generator (P1) and a drive motor (P2)—to deliver a combined 352 horsepower and 54.0 kgf·m of torque. This represents a 16% increase in power and a 26% increase in torque over the standard 2.5 turbo gasoline model, while improving fuel efficiency by over 25%.

A key technological advancement is the inclusion of a liquid-cooled hybrid battery, the first of its kind within the Hyundai Motor Group. This cooling method allows for more efficient temperature management, higher maximum discharge output, and more extensive use of battery power, contributing to an ‘EV-like’ driving experience characterized by quiet low-speed operation and smooth acceleration.

In addition to the GV80, Genesis is expanding its electrification strategy to include extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and plans to introduce hybrid or EREV technology to the GV70 and G80 models. The brand is also preparing future flagship models, such as the large all-electric GV90 SUV, which is expected to feature 666 horsepower and a 115-kWh battery. Furthermore, the high-performance GV60 Magma has been detailed, showcasing advanced torque vectoring and a dedicated Drift mode.

While the GV80 Hybrid launches in Korea first, Genesis Australia has confirmed that hybrid models will follow in the region by 2027.
