GeneStory uses DNA sequencing to identify fallen Vietnamese soldiers
Professor Vu Ha Van and GeneStory have utilized genomic research to assist in the identification of fallen soldiers in Vietnam. The project, titled ‘Gen Connection Journey - Finding Martyrs’ Names’, has collected over 70,000 DNA samples across 34 provinces through more than 600 mobile collection sessions, resulting in the identification of 23 martyrs.
This initiative builds upon the long-term ‘Decoding 1,000 Vietnamese Genomes’ project. The scientific significance of this work was recently highlighted by the publication of a study titled ‘VN1K is a pangenome-informed multi-omics and phenomics resource for the Vietnamese population’ in the journal Nature Communications on July 22.
GeneStory’s community-focused efforts were previously recognized at the Human Act Prize 2025. Professor Vu Ha Van emphasized that the mission to identify martyrs is a significant responsibility, noting that science achieves its true meaning when it helps return names to families.
