Overview

The nationwide “500-day-night” campaign to identify war dead continues to expand across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. As of October 15, 2026, the campaign has recovered 3,686 sets of remains, comprising 2,416 within Vietnam, 224 in Laos, and 1,046 in Cambodia. The initiative serves as a major effort toward the 80th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day in 2027, with long-term goals to sample approximately 230,000 unidentified graves and perform DNA testing on 18,000 samples.

Significant repatriation ceremonies have taken place recently. In Ho Chi Minh City, authorities held a solemn ceremony on October 14 to honor and inter 731 martyrs (698 individual sets and one collective set of 33) recovered from the Le Thi Rieng Cultural Park area. The event included a 26-kilometer procession attended by high-ranking officials and citizens. In Tuyen Quang province, 93 martyrs found at the Vi Xuyen battlefield were interred at the Vi Xuyen National Martyrs Cemetery. In Can Tho, 120 sets of remains were also laid to rest.

Regional recovery efforts remain intensive. In Cambodia, teams have reported finds in Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, and Kratie provinces. In Laos, remains were recovered in Savannakhet and Sekong, including five Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in Bolikhamsai Province. Within Vietnam, 24 sets of remains were recovered in Gia Lai province. To support identification, Hai Phong has launched a DNA sampling campaign targeting 7,518 relatives of unidentified martyrs, utilizing mobile teams to collect samples from those unable to travel.
