Vietnam war remains recovery, ID & commemoration

Overview
The 500‑day night campaign to locate, exhume and DNA‑identify missing Vietnamese soldiers continued through late July 2026, now extending its reach into neighboring Laos and Cambodia. By 25 July officials reported the recovery of 1,024 remains in those two countries, bringing the overall tally of identified individuals to more than 1,400 across the region.
In Vietnam, search teams expanded their discoveries: the Hang Đá Sập cave in Da Nang yielded nine bodies after two weeks of digging, a new trench at Le Thi Riong Park in Ho Chi Minh City produced additional skeletal remains, and the Quảng Trị hill team added five bodies.
National commemorations underscored the humanitarian thrust. On 26‑27 July the nation observed the 79th Veterans‑and‑Martyrs Day with televised tribute programmes, wreath‑laying at sites such as Côn Đảo, Ba Đình and the Monument to the Heroic Martyrs, and a ceremony at Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum. High‑level delegations including President To Lam and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung visited key memorials, a new house for a veteran family was opened in Nghệ An, and a reconstructed memorial for hero Trần Văn Thọ was inaugurated.
Family‑driven initiatives continued to bear fruit: digitised tombstone archives reunited martyr Huỳnh Văn Bằng after 72 years, DNA‑confirmed remains of martyr Nguyễn Trọng Cát were returned home, and youth volunteers restored more than 60 faded photographs of fallen soldiers for relatives in Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City.
The campaign’s field work also uncovered a mass grave at point 74 in Minh Đức commune, Dong Nai, yielding six new sets of remains and two leather wallets containing portrait photographs that will aid identification. The discovery added 21 bodies to the count and highlighted the continued effort to bring closure to families while educating younger generations through school remembrance programmes.
