Genetic research links eating disorders to metabolic factors
Large-scale genetic research has revealed that eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and binge eating are complex conditions that cannot be defined solely by body weight or body mass index (BMI). Studies led by the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King's College London, published in Nature Mental Health, indicate that the genetic drivers of these disorders differ from the genes associated with weight.
Researchers identified eight genetic loci associated with anorexia nervosa and six areas associated with the symptom of binge eating. The findings suggest that anorexia is a “metabo-psychiatric” illness, as genetic associations extend beyond mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder to include metabolic characteristics, lipid levels, and blood glucose.
The research emphasizes that these disorders are polygenic, meaning they involve thousands of genetic variants that interact with environmental and psychological factors. Rather than determining a fixed destiny, these genetic markers indicate a biological vulnerability.
