New York Jets manage QB depth amid Geno Smith injury concerns
The New York Jets are managing quarterback depth and health as they approach their second preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Starter Geno Smith has been dealing with ankle soreness, which caused him to miss the preseason opener. While Smith has returned to practice without apparent limitations, head coach Aaron Glenn has not confirmed whether Smith will start this Friday, noting the need to balance player desire to compete with injury management.
In Smith's absence during the previous game, rookie Cade Klubnik led two scoring drives. Despite social media speculation regarding a potential quarterback controversy, the coaching staff maintains that Smith is the established starter for the upcoming season. Klubnik is currently being developed as the primary backup, with Smith providing mentorship to help the rookie learn the offense.
Other rookies have also made an impact during the preseason. Offensive lineman Anez Cooper earned high grades from PFF, and undrafted free agent Mory Bamba showed versatility in the secondary and on special teams, though Bamba is currently limited due to a knee injury. Defensive end Nathan Voorhis also stood out with plays against the run.
