Jets finalize roster and prepare for regular season
Overview
The New York Jets’ preseason concluded with a 23-6 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. Following earlier decisions to rest starter Geno Smith, the game served as a platform for backup quarterbacks, though rookie Cade Klubnik struggled, completing 6 of 13 passes for 59 yards and an interception.
The matchup was overshadowed by a significant injury to Jets rookie running back Chip Trayanum. After scoring the team’s only touchdown of the half on a 1-yard run, Trayanum was tackled by Trace Ford on the final play of the first half and subsequently taken to a hospital with a neck injury. The Jets later reported that Trayanum was “awake, alert, and able to move all extremities.”
Following the preseason, the Jets named Klubnik as the backup to Geno Smith for the upcoming season. Head coach Aaron Glenn praised the rookie’s intelligence and improvement, noting that Klubnik finished the preseason with 134 passing yards and 22 rushing yards. To finalize the roster, the team released Bailey Zappe and waived Brady Cook.
In additional injury news, edge rusher Joseph Ossai is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a ruptured plantar fascia in his foot. Ossai is currently considered week-to-week.
As the regular season approaches, Geno Smith is set to start at quarterback this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, marking his first regular-season start for the franchise since October 2016. Smith has also been voted by his teammates as one of the team's six captains. Additionally, running back Breece Hall is progressing from a right groin strain and may be available to play this Sunday.
