Genoa joins European initiatives for inclusive and sustainable mobility

The city of Genoa has joined several European initiatives aimed at improving urban accessibility and sustainable transport. The municipal government approved joining “InclusiveSpaces,” a Horizon Europe-funded network focused on creating barrier-free public spaces and transport systems. As an observer, Genoa will study the experiences of pilot cities such as Madrid, Hamburg, Athens, Larnaca, Geneva, and Budapest to implement universal design and improve safety for people with disabilities and the elderly.

Additionally, Genoa has officially committed to the 2026 European Mobility Week, scheduled for September 16–22. Under the theme “Mobility for All,” the campaign focuses on intergenerational equity, gender equality, and safe urban spaces. The program will include various workshops and cultural activities to promote public transit and active mobility, culminating in a Car-Free Day on September 20, where major urban areas will be closed to motorized traffic to favor pedestrians and cyclists.
