Genoa urban mobility and accessibility initiatives
Overview
The municipality of Genoa has committed to several European initiatives focused on enhancing urban accessibility and sustainable transport. The city has joined ‘InclusiveSpaces’, a Horizon Europe-funded network, to study universal design and barrier-free public spaces by observing pilot cities such as Madrid, Hamburg, and Athens.
Furthermore, Genoa has officially joined the 2026 European Mobility Week under the theme ‘Mobility for All’. This program aims to promote intergenerational equity and safe urban spaces through workshops and cultural activities, including a scheduled Car-Free Day on September 20 to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists over motorized traffic.
In support of these sustainability goals, the city has launched a participatory urban planning initiative titled ‘Passeggiata urbanistica’ (Urban Walk) to assist in the development of the new Municipal Urban Plan (PUC). The inaugural walk occurred in the Pegli district, where local officials and architecture experts worked to define the perimeters of 19 historical centers within the Greater Genoa area.
This project seeks to implement a polycentric ‘15-minute city’ model by valuing established urban nuclei. Officials stated the initiative aims to build a collective understanding of neighborhoods by involving residents directly in the planning process, rather than relying solely on maps.
