Genoa prosecutors investigate death during lung procedure
The Prosecutor's Office of Genoa has opened an investigation following the death of a man during a pulmonary procedure at Villa Scassi Hospital. The patient, aged 75 or 76, reportedly suffered a severe hemorrhage after a blood vessel was allegedly injured during an endoscopic intervention.
Following the complication, vascular surgeons intervened and the patient received blood transfusions before being moved to the intensive care unit, where he subsequently died. The case was reported to judicial authorities by the department's anesthesiologists. Investigators have acquired the medical records to clarify the dynamics of the event and determine if any criminal liability exists. An autopsy is expected to be a decisive factor in the inquiry.
This incident follows another recent death in Genoa at San Martino Hospital in early August, where a 60-year-old woman died due to a hemorrhage during a lung biopsy.
