Medical investigations into pulmonary procedure deaths in_G_

Overview

Authorities in Genoa have launched investigations into multiple patient deaths occurring during pulmonary procedures at local hospitals.

In early August, a manslaughter-by-negligence investigation was opened at San Martino Hospital following the death of a 60-year-old woman. The patient died on 22 July after suffering a severe internal hemorrhage during a routine lung biopsy. Prosecutor Valentina Grosso ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of the bleeding and assess procedural correctness, naming the department chief and a resident doctor as suspects.

In mid-August, a second investigation was initiated following the death of a patient aged 75 or 76 at Villa Scassi Hospital. The patient reportedly suffered a severe hemorrhage after a blood vessel was allegedly injured during an endoscopic intervention. After vascular surgeons intervened and the patient received blood transfusions, he died in the intensive care unit. The department's anesthesiologists reported the incident to judicial authorities, who are now reviewing medical records to determine if criminal liability exists.
