Genova launches mosquito disinfestation after West Nile virus case
Authorities in Italy are implementing preventive measures against arboviral diseases following a confirmed human case of West Nile virus in Genova. The city has launched an extraordinary disinfestation plan targeting four specific areas: Mura degli Angeli, Pontedecimo, Bavari, and the vicinity of the Andrea Gallino Hospital. This response follows one confirmed human case and two suspected cases in birds, specifically a jay in Pontedecimo and a hooded crow in Bavari.
The intervention includes immediate anti-larval treatments in public and private areas. In Genova, the treatment zones cover various radii around the affected locations to mitigate the spread of the common mosquito, which acts as a vector for the West Nile virus.
In Agrate Brianza, local authorities are also emphasizing prevention strategies due to the rising presence of diseases like Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and West Nile across Europe. Residents are advised to eliminate standing water in containers, use repellents, and wear protective clothing. In the event of confirmed cases, ATS Brianza conducts epidemiological investigations while municipalities activate adulticidal and larvicidal treatments.
