GenScan AI innovation aims to reduce MRI scan times in Nigeria

Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has presented GenScan AI, a medical imaging innovation designed to significantly accelerate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan times. Developed by Mary-Brenda Akoda, the technology was recognized as the winning entry of the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation (NPSI).

GenScan AI utilizes the C-MORE algorithm, a one-step framework that reconstructs MRI images to potentially reduce scan acquisition times by up to 90 per cent. Crucially, the system functions without the need for new MRI hardware, allowing healthcare providers to maximize existing equipment and increase patient throughput.

During a stakeholder presentation in Abuja, developers noted that the technology has undergone extensive testing, including over 15,000 cardiac MRI scans. The innovation aims to address diagnostic shortages and long waiting periods in Nigeria by making advanced imaging more efficient and accessible. The Nigerian government has also expressed a commitment to harnessing artificial intelligence and digital tools to strengthen cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment systems.
