GenScan AI medical imaging development in Nigeria
Overview
Mary-Brenda Akoda has developed GenScan AI, a medical imaging innovation designed to significantly accelerate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan times. Recognized as the winner of the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation, the technology utilizes the C-MORE algorithm to reconstruct images, potentially reducing scan acquisition times by up to 90 per cent.
The system, also referred to as GenMRI, functions on existing MRI hardware, allowing healthcare providers to increase patient throughput without expensive equipment upgrades. The technology has undergone extensive testing, including over 15,000 cardiac MRI scans.
In a blinded assessment with a consultant radiologist at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust in the United Kingdom, the AI-enhanced images were found to be “diagnostically equivalent” to conventional MRI images. Akoda intends to roll out the solution in Nigeria and the UK by the second half of 2027.
