Genta Koja wins Okinawa gubernatorial election

Genta Koja has won the Okinawa gubernatorial election, securing a record-breaking 420,000 votes. As an independent candidate, Koja received endorsements from six political parties, including the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito. His victory marks a significant shift in regional policy, as he supports the relocation of the US military base to Henoko and does not oppose the southward shift of the Self-Defense Forces, contrasting with the stance of incumbent Denny Tamaki.

The election was characterized by intense social media activity, with over 5 million posts on X during the 17-day campaign. Tomoaki Yara, a former member of the House of Representatives and former campaign staffer for Denny Tamaki, reported an unprecedented surge in disinformation and personal attacks against the incumbent. These included false claims regarding Tamaki’s heritage and fabricated images.

Journalists noted that Koja’s landslide victory was supported by a complex web of interests, including involvement from major political figures and the business community, though some of his initial campaign promises regarding economic doubling were notably absent from his final platform.
