Genta Koja wins Okinawa gubernatorial election amid bomb threats
Genta Koja has won the Okinawa gubernatorial election, defeating incumbent Denny Tamaki by a margin of approximately 147,000 votes. Koja secured 423,124 votes compared to Tamaki's 276,060. Analysis suggests the shift in voter preference was driven by economic concerns; while Tamaki maintained a base focused on the Henoko base issue, Koja gained significant support from younger generations and those prioritizing economic revitalization, wages, and cost-of-living improvements.
Following the decisive victory, Koja's campaign received bomb threats. On the morning of the 17th, threatening emails were sent to Koja's official website and several schools attended by his children. The messages demanded that Koja decline his position and call for a re-election, threatening explosions if these demands were not met. The threats are being viewed as an attack on democratic processes, as they target the families of political figures to overturn a clear electoral mandate.
