Geoje and Tongyeong hit by record rainfall and landslides

Record-breaking torrential rainfall has caused widespread flooding and landslides in southeastern South Korea, particularly affecting the cities of Geoje and Tongyeong. In Geoje, rainfall reached 782.5 mm over a three-day period, with hourly rates peaking at 124.5 mm. This extreme weather triggered a landslide in the Okpo district that buried the ground floor of an apartment building, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.

The National Fire Agency issued a national mobilization order to deploy 387 personnel and 84 pieces of equipment to manage the crisis. Emergency services have responded to nearly 2,000 reports and rescued 136 people. Significant damage includes washed-out roads, submerged neighborhoods, and the isolation of residents in various villages.

In response to the severity of the situation, the South Korean government has activated Level 1 of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters. Authorities are working alongside local police, military, and utility companies to manage debris removal, power restoration, and ongoing rescue operations as heavy rain continues to threaten the region.
