South Korea heavy rain flooding persists, drownings reported

Overview

Mid‑July downpours produced record rain accumulations in Daegu and North Gyeongsang, triggering flood warnings, landslide alerts and a five‑hour closure of the Dongbu Expressway. Over 300 people were evacuated in North Gyeongsang and 208 flood‑related incidents were logged in Seoul, Incheon and surrounding districts. Nationwide more than 600 residents were temporarily displaced, roughly 134 hectares of cropland were flooded and 1,276 firefighting or rescue operations were carried out. Authorities recorded 521 damage incidents, of which 444 had been fully restored, and no fatalities were reported.

By 21 July joint civil‑military teams in Andong had deployed 666 personnel over three days to clear inundated homes, restore fields and repair 23 public facilities, including roads and waterways. Temporary shelters, food and relief supplies were provided and modular housing is being arranged for families still without homes. Ongoing work focuses on road repairs, river‑bank reinforcement and pest‑control assistance for farmers.

In early August separate water accidents in North Gyeongsang Province resulted in multiple drownings: a 30‑year‑old man in the Uljin River, an 80‑year‑old female diver off Pohang, and two men in their 60s at the Euncheon Reservoir all died after cardiac arrest. The Korea Coast Guard, fire services and police deployed dozens of personnel, opened investigations and reminded the public of water‑safety precautions.
