Geoje City Council member calls for improved disaster response system

Geoje City Council member Yun Hyeon-ah has called for the establishment of a practical disaster response system following heavy rainfall that caused significant disruption in the region. During a recent session, Yun highlighted issues arising from recent record-breaking rains, noting that 18 apartment complexes in Geoje experienced power and water outages.

Specifically, a flooded underground parking lot in Suyang-dong led to the evacuation of 715 households. Yun criticized the current administrative response, pointing out that designated evacuation centers, such as the Geoje City Gymnasium, were located too far from residents' living areas to be effectively utilized. She also noted delays in providing childcare services for children at flooded daycare centers despite the proximity of support facilities.

To improve future responses, Yun proposed three key measures: securing evacuation facilities within residential areas and regularly checking their capacity, establishing pre-determined procedures for various institutions to open their facilities during emergencies, and creating an integrated disaster relief system that combines evacuation, meals, relief supplies, medical care, and childcare.
