George Russell faces engine penalties and fading title hopes
Mercedes driver George Russell faces significant setbacks in his 2026 championship campaign following a power unit failure at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang. The failure, which occurred while Russell was running in third place, has resulted in two engine penalties for the remainder of the season. Consequently, Russell will start from the back of the grid in Singapore.
Russell has defended the reliability of his power unit, stating that the engine had not reached an unusual level of usage, having only completed six races. However, the mechanical misfortune has left him 84 points behind his teammate, Kimi Antonelli.
F1 pundits Martin Brundle and Jenson Button have suggested that Russell’s title hopes are effectively over. Brundle identified the Malaysian Grand Prix as the turning point, while Button noted that Russell has also struggled with pace relative to Antonelli throughout the season.
