George Russell takes Austrian GP pole as Carlos Sainz battles performance woes

George Russell earned pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, benefiting from a precise interpretation of the yellow‑flag rule that allowed him to maintain his lead without penalty. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Russell’s smart use of the regulations, while Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur questioned the legality of pushing under yellow‑flag conditions.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz struggled in qualifying, finishing 18th and more than two seconds off the pace. He cited the hot weather and high‑speed tyre degradation as factors limiting performance and said the team needs to unlock further pace to have any chance of advancing to Q2.
