George Russell wins Austrian Grand Prix, tightening Formula 1 title fight
George Russell (Mercedes) captured his second victory of the 2026 season at the Austrian Grand Prix, leading from pole to the checkered flag and cutting the championship leader Kimi Antonelli's advantage to 40 points. Max Verstappen finished second after a strong recovery from a qualifying incident, while Antonelli secured third, keeping his lead in the drivers' standings. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and Charles Leclerc eighth, highlighting Ferrari's ongoing struggles with tyre wear and power‑unit performance on the Red Bull Ring.
The race also saw a double retirement for Cadillac, with Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas withdrawing after brake‑overheat issues. Fernando Alonso, starting from the back of the grid for Aston Martin, used the session to deliver a motivational radio message despite qualifying 21st. Charles Leclerc criticised his Ferrari's engine on radio, describing the SF‑26 as “terrible”. The result gave Mercedes its seventh win in eight races and extended its constructors' lead to 302 points over Ferrari.
Ahead of the next round at Silverstone, drivers commented on the new 2026 hybrid regulations, with Verstappen humorously warning that the British circuit will expose battery‑power limitations.
