George Russell wins Austrian Grand Prix for Mercedes

British driver George Russell claimed his second victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season and the seventh of his career at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg. Russell held off Dutch rival Max Verstappen to finish more than five seconds ahead, while fellow Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli remained the championship leader, extending his lead to 40 points.

The race was run in extreme heat, with track temperatures above 50 °C, challenging tyres and cooling systems. Mexico’s Sergio "Checo" Pérez retired on lap five after a fire broke out in his Cadillac-powered Red Bull, and Finland’s Valtteri Bottas also slipped to the pits with brake‑disc trouble. Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto recovered from a difficult start to finish 15th after a three‑stop tyre strategy.

Other top finishers were Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) in the top five, followed by Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) and Lando Norris (McLaren). The result tightened the drivers’ standings, moving Russell into second place overall.
