Călin Georgescu remains in preventive arrest amid fraud charges and protests
Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, remains in preventive arrest following a decision by the Bucharest Court of Appeal. He faces charges of forming an organized criminal group and continuous fraud involving an estimated loss of 1.1 million euros. The investigation stems from a complaint by businessman Răzvan Leu, who alleges he was bribed with the aforementioned sum under the guise of a precious metals transaction.
In response to his arrest, AUR leader George Simion has called for large-scale demonstrations in Romania and among the diaspora. Supporters have held nightly protests near the Bucharest Central Arrest facility, with some gatherings lasting up to 12 consecutive nights. The Bucharest Gendarmerie has reported that these demonstrations often failed to follow legal procedures for public gatherings, resulting in 124 sanctions totaling 101,000 lei.
Amidst the legal proceedings, the political landscape remains volatile. AUR leadership has expressed opposition to the proposed Luca Niculescu government, calling for early elections instead. Meanwhile, Georgescu has used social media to address his supporters, expressing gratitude for their continued support during his detention.
