George Simion demands snap elections to end Romania political deadlock
Romanian opposition leader George Simion, head of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), is demanding snap parliamentary elections to resolve the country’s prolonged political deadlock. Simion warned that the ongoing crisis risks economic instability, stating, “Nobody wants a new Greece,” in reference to potential economic collapse.
Romania has lacked a fully functioning government since May following the collapse of a pro-European coalition. President Nicușor Dan has resisted calls for early elections, arguing that a campaign would delay essential budget reforms and public-service financing. In response, Simion has accused the president of blocking democracy and indicated that parliamentary support is being built to initiate suspension proceedings against Dan.
Currently, political parties are evaluating whether to support Luca Niculescu, a diplomat nominated as prime minister, who must secure a confidence vote in parliament within nine days. The political paralysis has led to concerns among international investors regarding the country’s economic model and budget deficit.
