Georgian nationals arrested for smuggling 15 migrants in Lithuania

In the Ukmergė district of Lithuania, police collaborating with the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) detained two Georgian citizens who were transporting 15 undocumented migrants. The men were discovered after officers stopped a Poland‑registered Opel Vivaro and, shortly thereafter, a Lithuania‑registered VW Passat. The migrants, identified as three Afghans and twelve Pakistanis, lacked identity documents.

Both Georgian drivers were placed in temporary detention at the Vilnius border guard unit and later handed over to the Foreigners Registration Center, which arranged their return to Latvian authorities. The vehicles were seized. A pre‑trial investigation for illegal cross‑border human trafficking has been opened by the Vilnius prosecutor’s office, which has requested a custodial measure; the offence carries a penalty of up to eight years imprisonment or a fine.
