European migrant smuggling interdictions
Entities: Belarusian border · Special Operational Force “Shqiponja” · State Border Guard Service (VSAT) · Prosecutor's Office of Sarandë · Latvian State Border Guard Service
Overview
In late July 2026 Latvian border police intercepted two falsified “Latvijas pasts” mail trucks in the Krāslava and Daugavpils regions. A Latvian driver in a Toyota was found with six undocumented migrants; a Ukrainian driver in a Ford was pursued, stopped, and nine migrants emerged, while a border‑guard dog later located six more persons nearby, bringing the total to 21. All suspects have been placed under criminal proceedings for illegal border crossing.
A week later, Albanian police on the Librazhd‑Elbasan highway carried out coordinated raids that detained three suspects – Florjan Mustafa, Aleksandër Rira and Denis Çollaku – who were transporting a total of 24 migrants (14 in one vehicle, 10 in another). The smuggling vehicles were seized and the case forwarded to prosecutors for further action.
On 6 August 2026 Lithuanian authorities, together with the State Border Guard Service, arrested two Georgian nationals in the Ukmergė district after they were found moving 15 undocumented migrants (three Afghans and twelve Pakistanis) in an Opel Vivaro and a VW Passat. The men were detained, the vehicles seized, and the investigation was handed to the Vilnius prosecutor’s office, which may seek custodial measures of up to eight years imprisonment.
