Georgina Lightning, Indigenous filmmaker, dies at Alberta rodeo

Indigenous filmmaker and actor Georgina Lightning has died at the age of 63 following an incident at the Enoch Park race track in Alberta. Lightning was standing in a designated media area during an Indian relay event at the Enoch Rodeo Grounds when she was struck by a horse that veered off the track.

Her daughter, Crystle Lightning, confirmed the news, describing the loss as shattering. Lightning, a member of the Samson First Nation and a prominent advocate for First Nations causes, was reportedly at the track for an upcoming documentary.

The Enoch Cree Nation expressed its mourning, stating that the community is grieving the loss of a member. The RCMP confirmed the fatality and noted that Occupational Health and Safety will take over the investigation into the incident.
