Gerardo Sánchez Zumaya nominated for San Luis Potosí governor despite corruption claims

Mexico's Labor Party (PT) has put businessman Gerardo Sánchez Zumaya forward as its candidate for the governorship of San Luis Potosí, even as he faces multiple accusations of money‑laundering and enrichment through contracts with state oil company Pemex. Prosecutors say his firms secured more than 520 million pesos in Pemex contracts between 2021 and 2024 and that he operated a alleged laundering network involving transactions worth over 15 billion pesos. Earlier allegations include a suspected diversion of a pension fund and links to a rival Morena politician, Adán Augusto López.

Sánchez Zumaya, who has never held elected office, says he is a victim of defamation, pledges he will walk “free and blessed,” and argues that registering with PT is equivalent to registering with Morena. PT national leader Alberto Anaya defended the candidacy, stating that Sánchez Zumaya has no formal investigations and that his profile will be examined by the coalition’s candidate‑selection committee.
