GERB proposes driving licenses for electric scooter riders
A group of deputies from the GERB political party has proposed an amendment to the Road Traffic Act in Bulgaria that would require electric scooter riders to hold at least an AM category driving license. Under the proposal, individuals would need to complete a course covering theory, practical driving, and first aid, though holders of existing car or motor vehicle licenses would be exempt.
Failure to comply would result in fines of 150 euros for a first offense and 500 euros for repeat violations. The proponents cited safety concerns, noting that 498 people were injured in scooter-related incidents over the last 18 months, with two-thirds of those victims being under the age of 17. The goal is to ensure all road users are familiar with traffic laws to improve safety.
