GERD prevalence rises in Indonesia as new fexuprazan therapy launches

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is becoming increasingly prevalent in Indonesia due to changes in dietary patterns and lifestyle. According to the 2022 National Consensus on GERD Management in Indonesia, the prevalence in the general population is estimated at 9.35 percent. Data from tertiary referral hospitals indicates that 55.4 percent of GERD patients suffer from erosive esophagitis.

During the Indonesian Digestive Disease Week (IDDW) 2026, PT Daewoong Pharmaceutical Indonesia launched fexuprazan, a new P-CAB (potassium-competitive acid blocker) therapy designed to provide rapid and strong acid suppression. Dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, Chairman of the Indonesian Gastroenterology Association, emphasized the need for new therapies and evidence-based clinical guidelines tailored to the Indonesian healthcare context.

Prof. Ji Won Kim of the Korean Gastroenterology Association noted that the introduction of fexuprazan in Indonesia represents a significant momentum for improving the quality of life for patients suffering from the chronic condition.
