Gerhard Zeiler seeks SPÖ leadership to prevent party irrelevance

Media manager Gerhard Zeiler has issued an open letter to the members of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) seeking support for his ambition to become party chairman. Zeiler warns that the SPÖ is currently on a path toward becoming “federally irrelevant,” citing recent polls that place the party at approximately 15 percent.

In his letter, Zeiler advocates for a strategic realignment, stating that the party must move toward the political center to halt the rise of the right. He emphasizes the urgency of this change ahead of upcoming state elections in Upper Austria, Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg, and Lower Austria, noting that the party risks being squeezed between opposing political blocs without federal support.

Zeiler acknowledges the fatigue among members regarding constant leadership disputes and promises that, if elected, his first priority will be to restore unity and cohesion within the party.
