Gerlach peak climbing attempt results in death of Polish tourist
A 36-year-old Polish man died in the High Tatras in Slovakia while attempting to climb Gerlach, the highest peak in the country. The incident occurred in the Batyžovska Valley after the man reportedly fell several meters.
Slovak Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) deployed a team and a helicopter with two medics to the scene. Rescuers confirmed the man had sustained fatal injuries. His body was transported to Starý Smokovec and handed over to the police and a medical examiner.
A second Polish tourist, aged 40, was also present at the site. He was unable to descend the terrain on his own and was evacuated by helicopter to Starý Smokovec.
Authorities note that Gerlach has no marked hiking trails and requires high physical fitness, significant experience, and basic climbing skills due to steep and exposed terrain.
