Mountain climbing fatality in High Tatras
Overview
A 36-year-old Polish man died in the High Tatras in Slovakia while attempting to climb Gerlach, the country’s highest peak. The incident occurred in the Batyžovska Valley after the man reportedly fell several meters.
The Slovak Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) deployed a helicopter and medics to the scene, confirming the man had sustained fatal injuries. A second Polish tourist, aged 40, was also present at the site; he was unable to descend the terrain independently and was evacuated by helicopter to Starý Smokovec.
Authorities noted that Gerlach has no marked hiking trails and requires significant experience and climbing skills due to the steep and exposed terrain.
