German academic societies announce dissertation and music research awards

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie (DGSKA) opened its fourth dissertation prize competition, offering a first prize of €1,000 and two second prizes of €500 each. Nominations must be submitted by 31 January 2025 and are limited to dissertations defended between 1 October 2022 and 31 January 2025 at German‑language universities. The award will be presented at the DGSKA biennial meeting in Cologne.

At the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung (GfM) annual conference in Weimar, the society presented its promotions prize ex aequo to Julin Lee (University of Music and Theatre Munich) for research on soundtracks in science‑fiction TV series and to Dr. Daniel Suer (University of Siegen) for a study of music and dance in metal. Additionally, the GfM poster prize went to Anna Schaefer for work on memory culture in choral settings, and the NFDI4Culture Music Award was granted to Prof. Dennis Ried for the “Baumann digital” project.
