German Agency Warns Glycerin in Slush Ice Risks Children

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has issued a warning that glycerin (E‑422), used as a humectant in slush‑ice drinks, may pose a health risk to children. In a study of 62 slush‑ice samples collected between November 2023 and October 2024, the BfR found glycerin levels above those considered safe, noting that a dose of 250 mg per kilogram of body weight can lower intracranial pressure. Researchers said a single cup of slush ice could deliver that amount to a child. Although the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2017 concluded there were no health risks from glycerin, no maximum limit for its use in food has been set. The BfR now advises against the ingredient in products marketed to children.
