Germany warns on glycerin in slush drinks

Overview

It highlighted that a dose of 250 mg per kilogram of body weight can lower intracranial pressure and that a single cup may deliver that amount to a child. The agency noted the absence of an EU‑wide maximum limit for glycerin and urged manufacturers of products marketed to children to eliminate the additive.

Three days later, pharmacists in the Heinsberg district began informing parents about the risk. Their survey of local slush‑ice vendors found roughly two‑thirds of the samples contained glycerin, often without any labeling for loose servings sold at fairs, pools or amusement parks. The pharmacies recommend checking ingredient lists on packaged drinks and exercising caution with unlabelled slush‑ice.

German authorities continue to monitor glycerin levels in these beverages and advise parents to limit children’s consumption.
