German agriculture: New manure guidelines and fertilizer ban extensions

The DLG has released Guideline 510, which provides practical recommendations for the sustainable use of straw-based horse manure on grassland. The guideline aims to promote circular economy and soil fertility. A survey conducted by the DLG Horse Working Group in late 2024 involving nearly 300 farms across twelve German states revealed that approximately half of the surveyed businesses do not apply horse manure to their grassland.

In the Oberpfalz region of Germany, authorities have announced a 14-day extension to the ban on applying nitrogen-containing fertilizers to grassland, permanent grassland, and multi-year fodder land. The new restriction period is set from November 15, 2026, through February 14, 2027. This ban excludes solid manure from hoofed animals and compost. Additionally, nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers remain prohibited if the soil is flooded, water-saturated, frozen, or covered in snow.
