German agricultural fertilizer ban extensions

Overview

Authorities in various German agricultural regions have implemented extensions to fertilizer ban periods. In Middle Franconia, following requests from the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV), ban periods for grassland and perennial forage crops have been extended. In Altmühlfranken and the district of Roth, the ban now ends on February 14, 2027, while in the district of Ansbach, it ends on February 28, 2027. The BBV attributed this necessity to moderate rainfall following drought, which reactivated plant growth and extended the vegetation period.

Similarly, in the Oberpfalz region, authorities announced a 14-day extension for the ban on applying nitrogen-containing fertilizers to grassland, permanent grassland, and multi-year fodder land. This restriction period runs from November 15, 2026, through February 14, 2027. These bans exclude solid manure from hoofed animals and compost, but nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers remain prohibited if soil is frozen, snow-covered, flooded, or water-saturated.
