Alpine drought drives water shortages for farms and mountain huts
A prolonged drought across the Alpine region is severely limiting water supplies for livestock and mountain‑hut operations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and neighboring areas. Farmers in Bavaria, Austria and parts of Switzerland are resorting to water tanks, helicopter drops and even army‑supported deliveries to keep cattle alive. The German Alpine Club (DAV) reports that many huts have had to ration water, charge fees for drinking water and showers, close washrooms, and replace flush toilets with dry‑toilet systems. Some huts, such as the Blaueishütte in the Berchtesgaden National Park, now receive drinking water by helicopter at a cost of about €30 per minute, with single trips reaching €600. In response to the crisis, the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research has temporarily lifted duties on silage maize imports from mid‑August to 31 October, allowing farmers to import feed free of charge. The Swiss government also announced interest‑free operating loans and accelerated direct payments to support farms facing liquidity problems. Additional measures include using snow‑cannon water supplies in Graubünden and encouraging hikers to carry personal water reserves and practice water‑saving habits on the trails.
