Alpine hut water shortage spreads to farms

Entities: German Alpine Club (DAV) · Gabi Schieder‑Moderegger · Julian Rohn · Berchtesgaden National Park · Alpine region

Overview

The drought that began in early August 2026 continues to strain Alpine water supplies. The German Alpine Club (DAV) and Austrian partners report that most of their 320 high‑altitude huts are still rationing water, charging €4 per litre, closing washrooms and using dry‑toilet systems. Helicopter deliveries, costing about €30 per minute, remain essential for huts such as the Blaueishütte.

The crisis now extends to livestock operations across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and nearby regions. Farmers are resorting to water tanks, army‑supported drops and helicopter lifts to keep cattle alive. In response, Switzerland’s Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research has temporarily removed import duties on silage maize and offered interest‑free loans and accelerated direct payments to alleviate farm liquidity problems. Additional measures include using snow‑cannon water in Graubünden and urging hikers to carry personal water reserves and practice conservation.

Both Alpine clubs and the Italian Alpine association attribute the shortage to climate‑change‑driven drought and reduced glacier melt, underscoring the vulnerability of mountain tourism and agriculture to a warming climate.
