Germany's July 2026 Unemployment Surpasses 3 Million
The Federal Employment Agency reported that Germany’s total number of unemployed persons rose to 3.007 million in July 2026, crossing the three‑million threshold for the first time in years. The increase represents 71 000 more job‑seekers than in June and 28 000 more than a year earlier, pushing the unemployment rate to 6.4 percent. Seasonal factors such as the summer break, the end of many apprenticeships and a weak macro‑economic outlook were cited as the main drivers. Youth unemployment also rose, with 27 017 young job‑seekers recorded in Baden‑Württemberg. The labour market remains tight for vacancies: 653 000 job openings were registered in July, 25 000 above the same month in 2025. On the apprenticeship side, 418 000 applicants sought training places, while 437 000 apprenticeship positions were available, 35 000 fewer than a year earlier. Regional labour offices in several German districts reported modest month‑on‑month increases in unemployment, confirming the nationwide trend.
