Vacation scam warnings issued as fraudsters target travelers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Consumer‑protection presenter Peter Giesel, host of the TV series “Achtung Abzocke”, warned that online fraud has surged in Germany, especially scams aimed at holidaymakers. He cautioned travellers to double‑check internet bookings, avoid unverified ticket offers and be aware of petty theft in popular cities such as London.

In the German state of Saarland authorities recorded more than 30 shock‑call incidents in which callers pretended to be police officers demanding payments. The same report highlighted additional fraud trends, including counterfeit holiday‑rental ads, phishing emails and new AI‑driven spyware targeting smartphones.

Consumer organisations in Austria and Switzerland issued similar alerts, describing prize‑letter scams that ask for fees, and listing five common vacation‑fraud tactics: fake attraction websites, bogus villa listings, social‑media data‑theft, counterfeit customer‑service hotlines and phishing e‑mails. They advise using official URLs, verifying images via reverse‑search and contacting providers directly.

Overall, the warnings stress that travellers should verify offers, protect personal data and report suspicious contacts to the relevant authorities.
