German Army to procure low-cost cruise missiles

German Army Inspector General Christian Freuding has announced a decision to equip the army with low-cost cruise missiles designed for mass deployment. The goal of these weapons is to saturate and overwhelm enemy air defense systems. These missiles are expected to have a range of approximately 1,500 kilometers.

Freuding noted that these low-cost options will complement high-quality, strategic US-made cruise missiles that the German government intends to purchase. While specific candidates for the low-cost systems were not named, two market-available systems are currently being considered for qualification.

The German Army aims to begin receiving the first deliveries of these systems by 2027. In a related development, the US defense company Covenant recently opened a production facility in Leipzig, Germany. Covenant plans to begin manufacturing its Anthem weapon system in 2027, with production targets of 1,000 units in the first year and 5,000 units in 2028.
