Germany investigates 32 suspects for fraudulent citizenship claims

German authorities, including the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), are investigating 32 individuals for allegedly obtaining German citizenship through fraud. The suspects, primarily of Chinese origin, are accused of using forged documents to falsely claim descent from victims of National Socialism.

The scheme exploited Article 116 of the German Basic Law, which allows for the re-naturalization of those persecuted by the Nazi regime and their descendants. Investigations suggest the suspects hijacked the biographies of real historical victims to meet legal requirements. In approximately half of the cases, the suspects have already successfully obtained German citizenship.

Reports indicate that some of the accused may be wanted internationally for serious crimes, including murder and kidnapping, potentially using the fraudulent naturalization process to secure new identities. The Federal Administration Office (BVA) in Cologne, which processes these applications, has not commented on the ongoing investigation.
