German citizenship fraud investigation

Overview

German authorities, including the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Criminal Police Office, are investigating 32 suspects for allegedly obtaining German citizenship through fraud. The suspects, primarily of Chinese origin, are accused of using forged documents to falsely claim descent from victims of National Socialism.

The scheme exploited Article 116 of the German Basic Law, which allows for the re-naturalization of those persecuted by the Nazi regime and their descendants. Investigations suggest the suspects hijacked the biographies of real historical victims to meet legal requirements. In approximately half of the cases, the suspects have already successfully obtained German citizenship. Some accused individuals may also be wanted internationally for serious crimes, such as murder and kidnapping.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior has stated it will take all necessary steps to uncover fraudulent acts in these restitution processes. Once sufficient information is gathered, the Federal Office of Administration is expected to initiate revocation proceedings, which could result in the suspects losing their German citizenship.
