German Autobahn projects cause regional closures and traffic disruption

Autobahn GmbH announced that the A565 between the Bonn‑Nord interchange and the Bonn‑Nordost triangle will remain closed after cracks were discovered in the foreland bridge of the Bonn North bridge. The closure affects the entire region, prompting a call for a rapid taskforce that includes Deutsche Bahn and local transit operators to coordinate alternative routes, adjust scheduled rail replacement services, and plan a swift reconstruction, potentially using a 1:1 replacement structure.

From 3 August, the A1 Dortmund/Unna interchange will see a staged reduction of lanes in both directions, with one lane in the Cologne direction closed first, followed by additional lane closures a week later and again in the Bremen direction. The reductions are planned to remain in place until 2029 while several bridges—including the B1 bridge over the A1 and the Unnaer Straße bridge—are rebuilt. Some previously closed connections will reopen in August to ease congestion. The long‑term aim is to increase capacity and reduce traffic jams, but the works are expected to significantly burden commuters in the area during the construction period.
