German road closures for construction

In early July, German authorities announced extensive summer closures on three major Autobahn routes. The A4 between Köln‑West and Köln‑Eifeltor was fully closed from 22:00 on 10 July to 16 July, with weight limits enforced on the remaining lanes and traffic diverted via a large detour. Later in September, the A2 at Oberhausen‑Königshardt and the A40 around Bochum centre were each shut for several days, redirecting traffic onto the A42 and A448 while weight restrictions remained due to bridge work.

By late July, the focus expanded to regional roads. A full closure of the accident‑prone Burkauer Berg stretch in the Lausitz region of Saxony was imposed for safety monitoring, and the L395 between Kaiserslautern and Eselsfürth in Rhineland‑Palatinate entered a three‑week shutdown to renew its bridge deck and resurface the road. These measures, funded at about €2.2 million, illustrate the broader, ongoing effort to maintain and upgrade Germany’s road network, affecting commuters and businesses across multiple states.

Further developments in late July confirmed that the Burkauer Berg closure and the L395 works remain in effect, with the €2.2 million programme continuing. New Autobahn projects added to the disruption: the A565 between the Bonn‑Nord interchange and the Bonn‑Nordost triangle was closed after cracks were found in the foreland bridge of the Bonn North bridge, prompting a rapid task‑force with Deutsche Bahn and local transit operators to arrange alternative routes and plan reconstruction. From 3 August, the A1 at the Dortmund/Unna interchange began staged lane reductions—initially one lane toward Cologne, followed by additional closures a week later—set to continue until 2029 while several bridges are rebuilt. Some previously closed connections are slated to reopen in August to ease congestion, but commuters can expect prolonged traffic burdens as the works progress.
