German automakers advance electric vehicle production and efficiency
German automotive manufacturers are advancing new electric and hybrid vehicle technologies. Mercedes-Benz has commenced production of the third-generation GLA compact SUV. Built on the MMA platform, the new GLA will be available in both fully electric and mild hybrid petrol versions. The electric models include the GLA 200, GLA 250+, and the high-performance GLA 350 4MATIC, with the latter capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz is developing a fifth-generation A-Class hatchback, which is expected to increase in size and utilize the same MMA architecture to compete with rivals like the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3.
Separately, Volkswagen has unveiled the Mission Efficiency prototype, a technological experiment focused on extreme energy efficiency. Using the MEB+ platform, the four-seater electric prototype completed a recorded journey of 1,278.36 kilometers from Wolfsburg to Vienna. The vehicle achieved an impressive drag coefficient of 0.158 and maintained an average consumption of approximately 7.51 kWh/100 km during its trip, demonstrating the potential for significantly extended range in future electric models.
