German automakers face economic shifts in China and domestic restructuring

German automotive manufacturers are navigating significant economic challenges, characterized by intense competition in China and domestic workforce restructuring. In China, the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture has launched the Jetta M6, a fully electric sedan starting at approximately 11,000 euros (79,800 yuan). Built on the specialized ‘Jiesi’ platform, the vehicle offers various configurations with ranges between 465 km and 555 km (CLTC cycle) using LFP battery technology.

Simultaneously, BMW has initiated a voluntary departure program to address declining margins and shifting market dynamics. The company aims to eliminate approximately 8,000 positions, including management roles, by the end of 2027. Selected employees may receive severance packages of up to 650,000 euros, depending on age, salary, and years of service. This move follows similar downsizing trends at other major manufacturers, including Porsche and Jaguar Land Rover, as they respond to high energy costs and increased competition from domestic Chinese brands.
