German battery output reaches all‑time high in 2025

The German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (ZVEI) reported that total battery production in Germany rose 11 % in 2024 to €8.1 billion, reaching its highest level ever and setting a record for 2025. Lithium‑ion battery output increased about 28 % to €4.6 billion, while the overall market value grew 9 % year‑on‑year to €22.4 billion, approaching the 2023 peak of €24.3 billion. The surge is driven by growing demand in electric‑mobility and energy‑storage sectors.

China remained Germany’s main battery supplier, with imports up 25 % to roughly €11 billion. Hungary was the largest European source at €3.5 billion. For 2025, total imports are forecast at €22 billion (+4 %) and exports at €7.8 billion (‑2.5 %). Exports are 70 % to Europe, 14 % to the United States and 12 % to Asia, the latter down 34 %.

ZVEI battery division chief Christian Rosenkranz warned that the battery ecosystem’s competitive strength is under threat and called for reduced dependence on foreign supply, stronger investment incentives and effective anti‑dumping measures.
